Got a mortice lock that has stiffened, jammed, or lost its key? NW Locksmith repairs, replaces and fits Union locks and Chubb locks across North West and Central London, day or night. The classic Union 5 lever mortice deadlock sits on tens of thousands of London timber front doors, and when one starts to fail it is a job for a locksmith who knows the lock. Call 07383 010010 and a locksmith will be on the way.
A quick word on the name, because it causes confusion. The brand is now part of the Union and Assa Abloy family, so a modern Chubb lock is simply sold as a Union product today, while older doors still wear the original Chubb badge. Whatever the faceplate says, we work with all of them.

The 5 lever mortice lock is the heart of the Chubb range, and the one most people mean when they say Chubb lock. The modern equivalent is the Union C series. It is a deadlock set into the edge of a timber door and thrown with a long key. These Union and Chubb 5 lever mortice locks are designed and built to the British Standard that insurers ask for, with anti pick and anti saw security features that make them force resistant against a determined break in.
When we attend, we match the exact lock to your door. The two things that matter are the backset and the case size. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole, and these 5 lever mortice locks are commonly made in a 2.5 inch backset for narrower stiles and a 3 inch backset for wider ones. Getting the backset right is why a locksmith measures before fitting rather than guessing. A sashlock version, where a latch and deadbolt share one case, can be handed for left or right hung doors, and we set it correctly for yours.
A 5 lever mortice deadlock is far harder to pick or force than a basic 3 lever lock, which is exactly why the British Standard and most insurers specify 5 lever for a final exit door. A genuine Union 5 lever lock, CE marked and British Standard, is a quality product that resists the common attacks: it is anti pick, anti saw and force resistant by design. If your current lock is an older 3 lever, upgrading to a 5 lever mortice is a real security gain.
Here is the part that matters for your policy. The British Standard for mortice deadlocks is BS3621, and a British Standard Union or Chubb lock carries the Kitemark stamp on the faceplate. Most home insurance policies require a British Standard 5 lever deadlock on the final exit door, so if yours is not British Standard, a replacement is often both a security upgrade and a condition of cover. We fit British Standard, CE marked and, where needed, fire rated locks as standard, and we can point out the Kitemark so you are happy it meets the requirement. If you are not sure whether your lock is suitable, ask us and we will check.
Most of these door locks can be repaired rather than replaced. A stiff lock often just needs servicing and the correct lubricant. A bent key, a failed lever spring, or a dropped door that throws the bolt out of line are the usual faults, and we keep the common sizes in stock, both backsets in stock, so most jobs are done in one visit, as part of our door lock repairs. Where a door lock is beyond saving, we handle the lock replacement with a like for like unit in the right finish, from a satin chrome faceplate to polished brass, including the fire rated versions for a fire door, so the door looks as it should.
We also replace Union and Chubb sashlocks and the matching strike plates and keeps that wear out alongside the lock, and we fit the right British Standard product through a proper new lock installation where you want an upgrade.
Lost the key to your mortice lock, or snapped one? A mortice key is long and substantial, and when it bends or snaps it can jam the lock. Do not force it. We remove broken keys, and where you have lost a full set we change the lock so old keys no longer work, which is the only way to be sure. We work on door and window locks only, so we do not cut keys from scratch, but every lock we supply comes complete with its keys.
The brand built its name on lever locks, and the 5 lever mortice deadlock is still one of the most trusted and insurer friendly ways to secure a timber door. Many period London homes pair a Chubb mortice deadlock lower down with a rim latch up top, and keeping that deadlock in good order is what actually stops a break in. It is a simple, reliable, quality product, which is why so many customers stay with Union and Chubb rather than switch. If you want to compare it against other options, our rundown of the best door locks is a good place to start, and for the higher security brands we also fit Banham, Yale and Mul-T-Lock.
You do not have to source anything yourself. We keep the common Union and Chubb mortice locks in stock, both backsets kept in stock, with the main finishes, including satin chrome, in stock, so most jobs are supplied and fitted in a single visit. If you have already bought a lock, that is fine too: plenty of customers have purchased a lock online or had one supplied with a new door, and we are happy to fit it, provided it is the right size and suitable for the door. Bring us what you bought, or let us supply it, and either way the lock is fitted properly, tested, and left ready to use. A lock bought cheap and fitted badly is a weak door, and a lock bought right still needs fitting right, so the fitting matters as much as the lock.
